Different waters, different fishing
The lakes and rivers around Ranua offer varied fishing, but no species list guarantees a catch or confirms that every species occurs in every water. Choose the place and method together, then check its current permit conditions.
Lake fishing: Koirajärvi and Simojärvi
Pike and perch are familiar targets for spinning with wobblers, soft lures or spoons. Boat fishing allows access to different depths and structures; trolling with several rods requires the appropriate additional permissions. Whitefish and other lake species call for different techniques and local knowledge.
Simojärvi's official fishing information lists species including pike, perch, pike-perch, burbot, trout, whitefish and vendace. Check local advice rather than treating Arctic char as a guaranteed target here. On Koirajärvi, ask us about recent experience and suitable places instead of assuming that all northern fish occur beside the lodge.
Simojoki: a salmon river
Simojoki is known for its naturally reproducing Atlantic salmon. Grayling, trout and other species may be relevant to particular stretches. Fly fishing, spinning, bank access and wading must all fit the permit area and conditions. Do not target a fish during its closed season.
Planning by season
- Spring: melting snow changes flows and access. Check closures before planning river fishing.
- Summer: open water supports boat and shore fishing, with opportunities depending on temperature and species.
- Autumn: cooler water changes fish behaviour, but important breeding closures limit some fishing.
- Winter: ordinary ice fishing can target species such as perch when the ice is safe and local rules allow it.
Size limits and catch rules
Restrictions vary by species, water and population. Avoid relying on a general minimum-size table copied from another region. Check Simojärvi and the relevant Simojoki permit before fishing, and release protected or undersized fish as required.
A practical base at Mökki Tikka
The house has direct lake access and a jetty. The rowing boat is included in the stay; agree safe use and confirm available equipment before an outing. Bring your preferred tackle, suitable clothing and proof of any required permits. Leave fishing spots clean and handle fish carefully.
