Fishing from the cottage
At Koirajärvi, your fishing day can start beside the house. Basic fishing equipment is available free of charge. Pike and perch are among the fish we have caught here ourselves. We made our depth map while exploring with a fish finder; its numbers are individual readings rather than contour lines.
Larger Simojärvi offers further fishing opportunities. The Simojoki connects the lake to the sea and is of interest for grayling, pike and wild salmon in its lower reaches. Catches cannot be promised.
The national fisheries management fee
The fee generally covers ages 18–69 when using lures or traps or catching crayfish. Those already 65 by 31 December 2023 remain exempt. Simple one-rod hook-and-line fishing and ice fishing are generally free, subject to area exceptions.
2026 fees: €6 a day, €16 for seven days or €47 per calendar year. This does not replace every local permit. Check and pay through Eräluvat.
Koirajärvi: check local permissions
Koirajärvi is not a state Eräluvat permit area. Additional rights, such as multiple rods, nets, traps or crayfishing, require permission from the relevant water owner or local owners’ association, the osakaskunta. Contact us beforehand so the necessary permission can be clarified. Booking accommodation does not by itself grant unrestricted fishing rights.
Simojärvi: area 2587
Simojärvi is popular for trolling. Its fish include pike, perch, pike-perch, burbot, trout, vendace and whitefish. Multiple rods or lures require an additional area permit. Check the exact coverage on the map.

Simojoki: two separate areas
The roughly 180 km Simojoki runs from Simojärvi to the Gulf of Bothnia. Area 2580 covers the Ranua section; 2581 covers the Simo section. Grayling and pike are important in the upper river, while anglers targeting salmon usually focus on the lower reaches.
Selected upper-river access points are roughly 25–40 km from the cottage; lower-river points are around 120–150 km away. Depending on the location, allow about 30–40 minutes or 1.5–2 hours, and longer in winter conditions.
Adult prices for area 2581 in 2026: €25 for a day, €90 for a week and €120 for the season. Under-18s pay half. The national fee may be payable in addition.

Closed periods and catch rules
On the Simojoki, weekly closure runs from Monday 19:00 to Tuesday 19:00 during 15 June–31 August. Species-specific closed seasons and minimum sizes also apply. Consult current permit terms before each outing: an annual permit does not allow every species to be caught all year.
The published rules include a maximum of three salmonids per day, only one of them salmon, and minimum lengths of 50 cm for salmon and 35 cm for grayling. Trout rules also depend on markings and the adipose fin. Protected or undersized fish must be released immediately, including injured fish. Hook-and-line fishing and ice fishing are prohibited in the rapids and flowing sections of this migratory-fish river.

Planning a salmon trip
Runs, water levels and temperature vary from year to year. Late spring and early summer interest many salmon anglers, but a fixed date or a general annual total cannot predict your chances. Luke’s observation data can help with planning.

Ice fishing
The equipment shed contains an ice auger and winter rods. Prepare small lures or suitable bait, a seat and a flask. Check local ice conditions before stepping onto the lake; snow cover does not indicate safe load-bearing ice. Guided outings are another option.
Respecting fish and water
Keep only fish that may legally be retained and that you can use. Handle released fish gently and dispatch retained fish promptly and correctly. Do not leave fish waste on the shore; ask locally about the designated disposal method.
