How do you get here?
Fly to Rovaniemi and continue by rental car. Alternative airports include Oulu, Kuusamo, Kemi and Kittilä. Trains from Helsinki to Rovaniemi take around eight hours, with night trains also available. You can travel to Ranua by bus; collection can be arranged.
Where is the house?
Mökki Tikka stands on our private, quiet peninsula in Lake Koirajärvi, in the Simojärvi lake region. The address is Huiliniementie 5A, 97765 Ranua, approximately 1.5 hours from Rovaniemi Airport.
Are there many mosquitoes?
Yes, especially around Midsummer. Their numbers depend on weather and location; wind, cool weather and dry conditions can reduce them, while rain may bring more. Long clothing, insect nets and suitable protection help. Our detailed mosquito guide explains how to prepare.
What can you do around the house?
- Observe wildlife and look for animal tracks in the surrounding forest.
- Watch birds, including swans and birds of prey.
- Fish at Koirajärvi or Simojärvi; basic fishing equipment is available.
- Pick blueberries, lingonberries, crowberries and mushrooms in season.
- Swim, take out the raft or canoe from the private jetty.
- Look for the Northern Lights on clear, dark nights.
- Enjoy sunrises, sunsets and the quiet surroundings.
Which season should you choose?
Spring brings returning daylight, migratory birds and the first flowers. Summer offers long days, birdsong and time by the water. Autumn brings colourful forests, clear air, berries and mushrooms. Winter covers the landscape in snow and offers opportunities to watch the Northern Lights.
How cold does it get?
Winter temperatures can fall to −37 °C. Dress in several warm layers and protect your hands, feet and face. Plan time outdoors according to the conditions and your own comfort. Houses and rental cars are equipped for the northern climate.
How dark is winter?
In midwinter, daylight lasts only a few hours. Snow reflects available light, stars stand out on clear nights and the Northern Lights may appear. The darkness is part of the winter experience.
What are the bright summer nights like?
Nature follows a different rhythm during the bright northern summer. Reindeer may wander at night and birds keep singing. You can enjoy a late walk, swim or time on the lake in soft evening light.
When can you see the Northern Lights?
From around mid-August to March, dark and clear nights offer opportunities. Our remote location has little artificial light, but a sighting can never be guaranteed.
Can you meet Santa?
Visit Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, open year-round. It is a convenient outing when arriving or leaving through Rovaniemi. We can also arrange a private visit from Santa at the cabin.
