What is ice fishing?

Finnish pilkki fishing uses a short rod through a hole made in lake ice. Perch and pike are possible targets, depending on the water and technique. Sitting quietly, watching the line and enjoying the landscape is part of this traditional winter activity.

Season and safe conditions

Ice fishing is associated with winter, often from December into spring, but the calendar does not determine whether a lake is safe. January to March offers gradually increasing daylight. Weather, currents, springs, snow cover and recent thaw can all affect the ice.

Do not rely on a general thickness figure or assume that a frozen-looking lake is safe. Ask for current local guidance before going out, avoid uncertain areas and choose a guided trip when you lack experience. Safety equipment is needed as part of preparation, not as a reason to enter unsafe ice.

Equipment for a comfortable outing
