A variety of habitats
Simojärvi's shores and islands, Koirajärvi's wetland surroundings and the rivers around Ranua create varied birdwatching settings. Farther afield, Posio, Syöte, Riisitunturi and the Rovaniemi area add old forest, fell and different wetland habitats.
Choose sites by access and habitat rather than assuming a long species list applies to each one.
Waders and water-associated birds
Common snipe, common sandpiper, green sandpiper, wood sandpiper and greenshank are useful species to learn for suitable northern habitats. Other waders, including ruff, spotted redshank and whimbrel, depend more strongly on place and season. Small northern waders may occur on migration or in breeding habitats well beyond the lodge area.
Forest birds and birds of prey
Taiga woodland offers its own possibilities, including grouse, woodpeckers and forest songbirds. Osprey and other raptors may be seen in appropriate landscapes. Eagles and owls need particular habitat and often considerable knowledge to locate without disturbance.
Snowy owl should not be presented as a routine Ranua sighting. Nor should a list containing Lapland longspur or ptarmigan be read as a guarantee beside a forest lake. Treat unusual species as possibilities to verify, not products to promise.
Seasonal planning
- Spring migration: changing conditions bring returning birds.
- May and June: song, display and breeding activity, with extra care to avoid disturbance.
- Late summer and autumn: migration and changing waterbird numbers.
- Winter: fewer species, but resident forest birds and tracks can reward patient observation.

Suitable accessible shores around Simojärvi and Koirajärvi can be a starting point. Check current information for bird towers and platforms around Posio and Rovaniemi, including Harjulampi and Niskanperä. Marked routes in Syöte or Riisitunturi offer different habitats, and walks near Ranuanjärvi may suit a shorter outing.

Bring patience and leave space
Binoculars, a field guide and time to listen are more useful than chasing a long checklist. Keep away from nests, private yards and sensitive sites. A guide can help interpret habitat and recent observations responsibly.
