Choose a route for the day

Autumn colours make Lapland especially appealing on foot, but summer and suitable winter conditions offer different experiences. Routes range from short family walks to remote terrain. Check current information rather than assuming every summer path is suitable in winter.

Near Ranua Wildlife Park

The original guide describes a roughly 3.4-kilometre nature or exercise route near the park as an accessible starting point. Check the maintained route, lighting and any winter ski-track arrangements locally. Repolampi is mentioned as a possible sheltered rest stop; confirm the actual access route and facilities before combining names into a walk.

Ranuanjärvi

A route of about seven kilometres follows the northern side of the lake, with access described around the Christian College or Laivala. Check whether the distance covers your intended out-and-back route. A lakeside shelter can provide a useful break.

Koukku Äijä

This roughly eight-kilometre route is associated with the area between Mauru and Peurajärvi and follows river and forest terrain. The source mentions access via Alkulantie, Ruonalammentie or Hermolantie and a simple hut near Suhankojoki. Verify current paths and hut information before relying on them.

Litokaira

This is a more remote option for experienced walkers, requiring navigation and self-sufficiency. The source points towards Papinpalo and Heinisuontie as an approach. Confirm the correct start and route with current official information; do not expect continuous signs or services.

Simojärvi and Soppana

The area has several routes rather than one simple circuit. The original Simojärvi route example is 14.5 kilometres from Korvajokisuu. Paasonjärvi is described as an 11.3-kilometre option, with a separate approximately five-kilometre Paasonvaara viewpoint walk.

Check bridge and boardwalk conditions carefully. Distances, connections and open facilities must be verified for the exact route you select.

Auttiköngäs

The approximately 3.6-kilometre circular route combines an impressive waterfall, old forest and a viewpoint tower. It can suit a family outing with appropriate ability and conditions. Steps, slopes and weather still need consideration.

Riisitunturi National Park

Riisitunturi offers short walks and longer routes through forest and fell landscapes. Snow-covered trees are a familiar winter attraction. Choose an official current route and starting point; different access areas are not necessarily interchangeable.

Korouoma

Korouoma is a canyon and nature reserve. The popular Koronjää route is about five kilometres and provides views of the icefalls in winter. Slippery conditions require preparation. Climbing is a specialist activity and should not be treated as an extension of an ordinary walk.

Maps, fire and huts

Use current official maps and download them before leaving mobile coverage. Check whether a fireplace may be used under current warnings, and do not assume a firewood supply. Open wilderness huts are shared emergency and resting resources with their own etiquette; they are not a guaranteed reserved bed.

See our main walking page for route references and ask us which outing fits your group.
