Enjoy the lake responsibly
A boat gives you a different view of Lapland: sheltered bays, forest shores and quiet fishing spots. The person in charge must have the skill and judgement appropriate to the boat and conditions. Do not confuse the absence of a licence requirement for many ordinary leisure boats with an absence of safety responsibilities.

The rowing boat and three-person canoe are included in the stay. Ask about their safe use and the available lifejackets before setting out. Basic experience with boats and weather is important: even a quiet-looking lake can become difficult in wind.
Trolling and fishing permits
Koirajärvi offers opportunities for pike fishing, while larger Simojärvi has a broader range of bays and underwater features. The national fisheries management fee may be required for lure fishing. Multiple rods, particular waters or methods can require an additional local permit; paying the national fee alone does not cover every form of trolling.

Watch for rocks and shallow water
Both lakes have natural shallows and submerged boulders. Low water can increase the risk to a hull or propeller. Use a suitable map, keep a careful lookout, stay well clear of uncertain shallows and travel slowly. A downloaded map can help with orientation but does not replace judgement on the water.
Weather and preparation
- Wear a correctly fitted lifejacket and check there is one for every passenger.
- Choose stable weather and turn back early if wind, rain or visibility deteriorate.
- Avoid thunderstorms and outings in darkness.
- Carry a charged phone, a power bank and offline navigation.
- Tell someone your plan and expected return time.
Mobile coverage varies. Finland's emergency number is 112, but a call still needs an available mobile network; it cannot be guaranteed where there is no signal at all.
Respect the shore and wildlife
Take all rubbish back. Keep away from nesting birds, reeds and restricted areas, and avoid noise near wildlife, other boats and private shores. Slow down near people and the shoreline.
