The basics for a trip to Ranua
Ranua is in Finnish Lapland, with Koirajärvi, Simojärvi and Simojoki offering different fishing settings. Finland uses the euro. Finnish is the local language and English is often useful in visitor services. Check entry requirements for your nationality before travelling.
Cards are widely used, including for everyday purchases and many permits. Finland uses type-F sockets; check your particular plug, as a Swiss three-pin plug may require an adapter.
Choose a season
- December–February: deep winter and ice fishing when the ice is safe.
- March–May: increasing daylight followed by snowmelt and changing access.
- June–August: long days and open-water fishing; prepare for insects.
- September–October: autumn colours, cooler weather and often fewer mosquitoes.
- November: a variable transition that can limit both boating and ice access.
The original temperature examples range from around −10 to −20 °C in midwinter to +10 to +26 °C in summer. Treat these as broad illustrations, not limits or forecasts. Check fishing closures before choosing a date for a particular species.
Driving and mobility
Drive on the right, follow posted speed limits and allow extra time for wildlife, snow and ice. Use the legally required lights and tyres appropriate to current Finnish requirements and conditions. Ask the rental company what winter equipment is included; do not assume every vehicle has studded tyres.
Many filling stations accept cards and use self-service pumps. Distances are substantial, so refuel before remote trips.
Holidays and shopping
Vappu on 1 May, Midsummer, Christmas and the summer holiday period can affect opening hours, demand and prices. Buy essential supplies ahead of holiday closures and check the hours of the shop you intend to use.

Mosquitoes and personal preparation
Summer insects are most noticeable in sheltered, damp places. Covering clothing, suitable repellent and a head net can help. Do not assume bites can never cause health problems; ask a pharmacist about suitable protection and treatment when needed.
Carry personal medication and appropriate travel insurance. Eligible travellers should bring their health-insurance documentation. Pharmacies are labelled apteekki; services may be far apart in rural areas.
Respect local habits
Quiet behaviour, punctuality, independence and care for nature are appreciated. Remove outdoor shoes when entering a home. Ask about sauna arrangements rather than feeling pressured by unfamiliar customs. Silence is not necessarily a sign of disinterest.
At Mökki Tikka, the lake, jetty, rowing boat, fireplace and outdoor cooking area provide a practical base. The catch is still up to the conditions and the angler.
