What changes between winter and spring?
Daylight increases rapidly in northern Finland. Around Rovaniemi, the source gives approximate examples of 2½ hours in December, four in January, eight in February and twelve in March. Actual daylight depends on the date and location; Rovaniemi is not a single reference for all of Lapland.
Winter temperatures are below freezing much of the time, and snow often remains well into spring. Weather varies. Northern lights require darkness, clear skies and suitable activity; long spring days reduce the hours available to see them.

Christmas and New Year are particularly popular, especially near Rovaniemi and Santa Claus Village. January can be quieter, while February and March remain busy around holiday weeks. April may offer quieter dates, but some winter activities finish as conditions change. Compare actual offers rather than assuming a month is always cheap.

Which period fits your priorities?
- November and early December: short days and developing winter conditions; do not assume every snow activity has started.
- Christmas and New Year: festive atmosphere and high demand, with very short days.
- January and February: deep winter, cold conditions and gradually increasing light.
- March: substantially longer days, often good snow and still-dark evenings.
- April: brighter spring conditions and potentially quieter stays; ice and snow activities depend on the thaw.

Christmas atmosphere beyond Christmas week
Santa Claus Village welcomes visitors throughout the year, with individual services operating their own hours. Our house is normally decorated from mid-November to mid-January. A private Santa visit can be requested at other times, subject to arrangement and availability.
Planning by activity
Dark-season months suit northern-light watching; established winter conditions suit snow activities; summer offers long bright evenings, fishing and canoeing; late summer and autumn bring berries and ruska colours. Ranua has very light summer nights but lies south of the Arctic Circle.
