Both females and males can have antlers

Reindeer are unusual among deer because females as well as males normally grow antlers. Their size and timing vary with sex, age and condition. Antlers are therefore an interesting clue, but not a reliable way for a visitor to determine an animal's exact age.

A new set each year

Antlers grow again after they are shed. During growth they are covered in soft, blood-supplied skin known as velvet. Once growth is complete, the antlers harden and the velvet is rubbed away.

Growing antlers takes energy and nutrients. Food availability and the animal's health influence development. Even young reindeer develop small first antlers, while mature males can carry much larger sets.

Why do shedding dates differ?

Mature males commonly shed their antlers after the autumn rut, during late autumn or winter. Females generally retain theirs longer, often until spring and, in pregnant animals, around the period after calving. Individual timing varies.

This means that a winter reindeer with antlers is not automatically a male. Familiar Christmas illustrations are not a reliable guide to reindeer biology.

What are antlers for?

Males use them in competition during the rut. For females, retaining antlers through winter can help in competition for feeding sites. Behaviour depends on the animal and situation; visitors should keep a respectful distance rather than approaching antlers for a closer photograph.

Antlers in northern everyday life

Antler has been used for tools, needles, buttons, knife handles and decorative objects. It is also a material in Sámi duodji and other northern craft traditions. The cultural background and maker matter: not every antler souvenir is an authentic Sámi object.

Some markets elsewhere use antler velvet in products associated with health claims. This article does not recommend it as a treatment or establish medical benefits.

Observe without disturbing

At a farm, follow the keeper's instructions before approaching or feeding an animal. In the landscape, watch quietly and let the herd move freely. Ask about the provenance of antler craft if you want a meaningful souvenir.
