Can a journey to Lapland be more responsible?

Can a journey to Lapland be more responsible?

Start with an honest question

I believe a more considered journey begins by asking why we want to go. Many guests describe a long-held wish for quiet: a week in the forest, a sauna, a fire and time without constant demands. I understand that longing.

A meaningful journey still has an impact

Travelling to Lapland creates emissions, particularly when flying. Staying longer, buying thoughtfully and supporting local businesses can improve aspects of the trip, but they do not cancel the impact of the flight. Carbon offsetting is not a reason to stop considering how we travel.

There is a difference between frequent, impulsive consumption and a carefully planned journey. That is a personal choice to examine honestly, not a calculation proving that an emotionally important holiday is carbon-neutral.

Life at Mökki Tikka

We offer a private house rather than a hotel programme. Cooking a meal, tending the fire, sitting by the water and setting the phone aside can be enough. Guests often discover that they need fewer scheduled activities than expected.

Practical choices

  • Consider a longer stay instead of several short trips.
  • Use existing or second-hand equipment where appropriate.
  • Shop locally and avoid unnecessary food waste.
  • Choose providers who explain their animal-welfare practices.
  • Spend some days walking, paddling or simply staying at the house.

What stays with you?

I value places that help people slow down. A journey need not be perfect to be meaningful, but meaning and environmental impact are different questions. Bring respect for nature and the people who live here, and make choices you can explain honestly.
