The first arrivals
From late March into April, depending on the weather, the first returning birds signal spring. Whooper swans and cranes are among the conspicuous arrivals, and their calls carry across the landscape. Arrival dates vary between species, years and different parts of Lapland.
Over the following weeks, watch for common snipe with their drumming display flights, goosanders on open water, rough-legged buzzards above clearings and waders on wet meadows and mires.
Where to watch around Ranua
Koirajärvi and the surrounding area offer varied places to observe:
- Lakeshores with the first patches of open water.
- Mires coming to life after winter.
- Open woodland edges with smaller birds such as yellowhammers, willow warblers and sparrows as the season progresses.
Bring binoculars, warm clothing and patience. Calm, clear mornings shortly after sunrise can be rewarding. Stay at a distance so feeding and resting birds remain undisturbed.
Why spring feels different
The return of migrants marks a new phase of the year. Lapland provides breeding grounds and stopping places for many species. Before vegetation becomes dense, it can be easier to observe what is happening.
You do not need to be an experienced birder to appreciate it. The call of a crane can be enough to make spring feel close, even while snow remains on the ground.
