Prepare before you reach the water

A little research is more useful than packing every piece of tackle you own. On an unfamiliar Finnish lake, local knowledge and a clear plan help you spend more time fishing and less time working things out.

1. Ask people who know the lake

Our local partners can share their experience when you arrive. Ask about conditions, likely fishing areas and what has been working recently.

2. Study the map

3. Speak to your hosts

Ask about useful spots, suitable lures and local restrictions, including closed seasons, currents and boating rules. Advice about a promising spot does not replace checking the permits you need.

4. Keep your plans flexible

Leave room for a local suggestion or a different lure. Conditions on arrival may be different from what you expected while planning at home.

5. Match your equipment to the trip

A compact fish finder can be useful. The original equipment example is a Raymarine Firefly 4. If bringing a portable unit, check the battery or power supply and how you will mount the transducer on the boat.

6. Explore gradually

Where permitted, trolling is one way to explore different depths and try lures while moving. It does not remove the risk of snagging or grounding. Hidden rocks can be well away from shore, so travel slowly and keep watch.

7. Try different lures

Vary colours and sizes and observe what changes. There is no guaranteed combination; what works depends on the fish and conditions.

8. Look for varied underwater terrain

If there are no bites, try another suitable area: a shallow bay in spring or summer, a steep drop-off or an underwater plateau. Lake maps and aerial views can help you orient yourself.

9. Consider a local guide

Preparation cannot guarantee a catch. It can make an unfamiliar lake easier to understand and leave more time to enjoy being outdoors.
