A two-hour sled-dog outing can seem expensive at first. Behind it are animals that need feeding, exercise, training and veterinary care throughout the year, while the snowy tour season may last only a few months.

Dogs are living animals, with individual needs and familiar handlers. The visitor's short outing is one small part of the work.

A visit near Posio

We remember visiting Riikka and Antti, who lived with their three children and around forty huskies outside Posio. Their house was simple and warm. The dogs each had a name and a history, and were clearly part of everyday life.

We were welcomed near the wood stove with a berry drink while the sleds were prepared. Later, in −18 °C conditions, Riikka explained how living with the dogs shaped their year, alongside forestry work and cottage renovation outside the main winter season. It was a useful reminder of the people behind a booking.
