What does sisu mean?
Sisu is an important concept in Finnish culture, and no single word translates it fully. It describes inner strength, perseverance and determination, expressed quietly and consistently rather than loudly.
- Keeping going when things become difficult.
- Staying calm rather than giving up.
- Continuing even when nobody applauds.
- Trusting that you can do something without needing to prove it.
Where do you encounter it?
Sisu appears in small moments of everyday life: shovelling snow at −25 °C, going winter swimming without making a fuss, sharing a long silence comfortably or accepting that things take time, whether it is the arrival of spring or a change in life.
An attitude, not harshness
Sisu is often equated with willpower, but it is not about being hard on yourself or others. It is a kind of inner steadiness: living with nature, taking responsibility without drama and doing things because they need doing, even when they are difficult.
Why does it matter today?
In a world of distractions, speed and comfort, sisu reminds us that strength can be quiet. Persistence matters even when progress is not immediate. Resilience can come from clarity rather than toughness.
Sisu is an attitude to life, not a superpower. Spend time in Lapland and you may begin to recognise it in the quiet, the cold, the landscape and yourself.
