A game after the sauna
When snow is falling outside and the evening is quiet, a pack of cards is enough to bring people together. Marjapussi is one of Finland's traditional trick-taking games, with local variations and a related bidding game called Huutopussi.
The basic idea
Usually four players form two partnerships, sitting opposite their partners. A shortened pack is used rather than the entire standard deck. Players win tricks and collect points, with king-and-queen combinations playing a part in declaring trump and scoring.
For one commonly described version, use 36 cards from six through ace and deal nine to each player. The original point values are ace 11, ten 10, king 4, queen 3 and jack 2. Simplified scoring and smaller packs also exist. Agree which complete rules you will use before dealing.
Use a consistent ruleset
The previous description with six cards per player and four face-up cards on the table did not describe this standard version correctly. Rather than mixing games, follow a complete explanation of following suit, trump, marriages and scoring. Read the Marjapussi rules.
Why try it?
The pleasure is partly in sharing time without a screen. Learning a few rounds together can be as enjoyable as playing competitively. If you are only two, choose a suitable two-player game rather than assuming the partnership rules work unchanged.
