A clear idea from the beginning
Marimekko was founded in 1951. Armi Ratia wanted clothing and textiles that stood out through colour, freedom and confidence. In post-war Finland, that was a bold approach. The name can be understood as “Mari’s little dress”; today, the range extends well beyond clothing.
Unikko: a poppy with a story
Maija Isola designed Unikko in 1964: large, flat poppies in strong colours. Floral prints had not been part of Ratia’s vision, but Isola pursued them. Unikko became one of Marimekko’s best-known designs and an expression of creative independence.
A recognisable style
Dresses, bags, tableware, curtains, cushions, umbrellas and bed linen all carry the brand’s distinctive patterns. Bold floral and geometric forms connect older designs with newer interpretations.
What appeals to us is the sense of individuality: everyday objects can have a clear character and bring colour into a room without needing elaborate decoration.
Production and lasting use
Marimekko’s headquarters are in Helsinki, while its production is international. Materials, manufacturing locations and environmental claims need to be considered product by product. Choosing something you will use for a long time matters more than treating a whole brand as automatically sustainable.
For visitors interested in design, Helsinki also offers the opportunity to explore Marimekko’s outlet and café; check the current visitor details before going.
Part of everyday Finnish life
In many Finnish homes, Marimekko appears in familiar objects: a cup, a placemat or a dress passed between generations. The designs show how colour and personality can become part of ordinary daily life.
