Mölkky: the Finnish throwing game at our cabin

Finland has a playful side as well as a quiet one. Mölkky needs no batteries or app: just wooden pins, a throwing stick and a little competitive spirit. We keep a set at Mökki Tikka, and guests regularly use it, especially after an evening sauna when there is some energy left but no desire for another walk.

What is Mölkky?

It is a Finnish outdoor throwing game. The aim is to score exactly 50 points. Players throw a cylindrical wooden stick at pins numbered from 1 to 12.

The basic rules

1. Set the pins close together in a triangular arrangement.
2. Take turns throwing the stick at them from a short distance.
3. If one pin falls, score the number printed on it.
4. If several pins fall, score the number of fallen pins: four pins give four points.
5. Exactly 50 points wins. If you go over, your score drops back to 25.

The idea is simple, but tactics emerge after a few rounds. With friends or family, and perhaps a cup of tea or a beer, the competitive side soon appears.

Why do we enjoy it?

It is straightforward and brings people together. Children can join in, adults often take it more seriously than planned, and everyone shares a laugh.

We play on the lawn in summer and sometimes with hats and gloves in autumn. Even snow does not rule it out: a sliding throwing stick adds another challenge.

A game by the lake in the evening light reminds you that having fun together does not require much.
