When the landscape changes
Cool air over the water, morning mist and the first yellow leaves: autumn often arrives quietly in Lapland. Finns call the autumn colours ruska. Around Ranua, Simojärvi and Koirajärvi, September is usually the main season, though the timing of the brightest colours depends on the weather.
Golden birches, red leaves and dark lakes
Birches turn yellow, bilberry leaves become red and mushrooms appear among the ground vegetation. Lingonberries add colour to the woodland floor. The air smells of damp earth and wood. On still days, the shoreline is reflected in the water.
On foot or by canoe
Woodland paths pass moss-covered stones and open mires. Walking gives you time to notice small changes. A canoe trip offers another view when wind and weather allow. Even on sunny days the water is cold; equipment and route need to suit the conditions.
The first frost does not mean the ice can carry you. Do not plan autumn skating on the basis of a date or a thin layer of ice. Neither tells you whether a lake is safe to walk on.
Dark nights return
From late August, nights become dark enough for northern lights viewing. Cloud cover and auroral activity also need to cooperate. Sometimes there is a faint veil; sometimes clearer green arcs move across the sky. A sighting is never guaranteed.
Watch wildlife and slow down
Reindeer may still pass through the area. Watch from a distance and leave their route clear. Mushrooms, berries and changing colours invite you to walk slowly and look more closely.
An autumn day need not be full: a walk, time by the lake and a quiet evening at the house can be enough. September is a season of its own between summer and winter, with changeable weather and a landscape that shifts day by day.
