Mökki means holiday cottage or cabin. Many people picture a timber house beside a lake, surrounded by woodland. There are also cottages without lake access and with very different facilities. What matters is the kind of stay you are looking for.
A retreat from everyday life
Simple cottage routines shape the idea of a mökki: carrying water, adding firewood, heating the sauna and preparing meals. In basic cottages, the sauna also serves as a washroom. Today, a cottage holiday often means time outdoors, quiet and a less scheduled day.
From basic to comfortable
Not every mökki has running water or electricity. Some have a wood stove and an outdoor toilet; others offer an equipped kitchen, bathroom and further comforts. Check exactly what is included before booking. The word mökki does not describe a fixed standard of facilities.
Why cottages matter in Finland
For many Finnish families, an owned, shared or rented cottage is a familiar place. Returning lets them experience the seasons and step away from daily routines. The point is not to fit in as many activities as possible, but to get to know a place.
