Who are the Moomins?
The Moomins are round, white, hippopotamus-like creatures living in a valley full of nature and unusual visitors. Their world is gentle and thoughtful, sometimes melancholy. Finland-Swedish artist and author Tove Jansson published the first Moomin book in 1945.
More than an adventure story
Alongside adventures, the stories explore solitude, freedom, belonging and friendship. Hospitality and a need for personal space can exist together. Characters do not have to be alike to care for one another.
Moominmamma brings calm, Moominpappa dreams, Snufkin values independence and Little My speaks her mind. Their different temperaments leave room for readers to recognise something of themselves.
Why adults enjoy them too
For many readers, the appeal extends beyond childhood. The books combine literature and illustration with questions about how to live with others while remaining yourself. Quiet passages and humour give the stories more than one level.

- Arabia Moomin mugs bring familiar illustrations to the breakfast table; some editions are collected.
- Moominworld in Naantali brings characters, houses and stories into a family attraction.
- The Moomin Museum in Tampere presents original illustrations and three-dimensional scenes.
- Books, calendars and illustrated objects appear in Finnish bookshops and design shops.
Naantali and Tampere are in southern Finland, so these visits belong in a wider Finland itinerary rather than a local day trip from Ranua.
