Five practical tips for a winter trip to Lapland

1. Prepare for cold weather

Temperatures depend on the date and weather. Expect subzero conditions and check the forecast before each outing. Base layers, insulating middle layers and a windproof outer layer let you adjust. Bring warm socks, suitable boots and spare clothing. Plan regular warm-up breaks with children.

2. Northern lights cannot be ordered

A clear, dark night and suitable auroral activity improve your chances. A forecast app can help you plan but cannot promise a sighting. Keep boots, warm clothing and gloves ready so you can go outside when conditions are promising.

3. Pack good mittens

Hands can quickly become cold on a snowmobile, dog sled or ice-fishing trip. Well-insulated mittens keep the fingers warm together. Thin liner gloves can be useful when briefly handling a camera. Keep gloves dry and leave enough room to move your fingers.

4. Protect batteries from the cold

Cold can reduce available battery power. Keep spare batteries protected in an inner pocket and follow the manufacturer’s temperature guidance. Do not attach hot heat sources directly to a battery. Let cold devices warm gradually in a protective case when returning indoors.

5. Try something new at your own pace

Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, a husky trip, ice fishing with local guidance or birdwatching can enrich your stay. Choose what suits you, your experience and the conditions. There is no need to do everything. Afterwards, leave time for a sauna, hot tub or quiet evening.

A winter holiday in Lapland is not only about major excursions. A short walk and the stillness around the house can be just as memorable. Mökki Tikka offers a base for both.
